Sealants: Shielding Your Child’s Teeth from Cavities at Bird Pediatric Dentistry
What Are Dental Sealants?
Dental sealants are thin, protective coatings applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth (molars) to prevent cavities. Sealants act as a barrier, ‘sealing’ out food particles and bacteria that cause cavities. We use the brand Embrace® WetBond – BPA free and fluoride releasing sealant material.
How Do Sealants Work?
Sealants are painted onto the tooth and quickly fill in the grooves of the tooth, forming a protective shield. The process is simple, painless, and only takes a few minutes per tooth! It’s kind of like finger nail polish made for teeth!
Benefits of Dental Sealants at Bird Pediatric Dentistry
- Effective Cavity Prevention: Sealants provide a physical barrier against decay-causing bacteria and food particles.
- Quick and Painless Application: The application is non-invasive and comfortable, making it easy for kids.
- Long-Lasting Protection: Sealants can last several years, offering prolonged protection during the cavity-prone years.
When Should My Child Get Sealants?
Sealants are most effective when applied to permanent molars soon after they erupt, typically between ages 5 and 18. Our dentists at Bird Pediatric Dentistry will recommend the best timing based on your child’s individual dental development. We can often do sealants at the same appointment as the dental cleaning; to save you time and a return trip to our office!
